Just a thought because it is cause of some confusion to many....(and prolly first request in manor history to remove a feature lol)

It's about the manor sounds... in music note.
it checks your puter for songs/sounds (local sounds)... and then at each manor it checks for server installed sounds.

Now... a lot of users think that all sounds in compiled list can be heard by everybody... but of course the sounds/songs from your own puter can only be heard by you *. Besides there is no clear indication which sounds are on server (everybody can hear them) and which are on your puter, other than that the server ones comes first in list.

This, as said, leads to confusion.

Now why in first place do that feature to add local sounds?... Everybody has a mediaplayer of some sort, so why not just use that, if you want to play songs for yourself?... why put it in manor? I bet it uses some resources too to check for local songs and hold the list in memory (well not a techy but I would figure it does)

so.. to sumarize I don't see the point.. au contraire it would prolly free up at least loading time of manor a bit and it would stop confusion about what sounds are on particular server.. and while you listen to your own songs, if somebody else starts music, you can choose to mute manor or stop your mediaplayer. But, as it is now... if a user is playing own songs through manor... then if someone else plays a song from server, it cuts off that users local song.
I just don't see the purpose of it all since it can only be played and heard by yourself anyway.

So, in short: my suggestion is to remove the local sounds (on your own puter) from the manor sounds list, and only let it check for sounds installed on the server you are on.

Well just a thought Smile

* well if two or more users share same song with same name stored locally on each puter, they can hear it together, ... but in ordinary manor life a third user would go HUH?? as usual and prolly get annoyed or confused and it is a bit esoteric to my mind.

That's all reasonable Cheiron, except your inital premiss is slightly in error.

If you have the same sound file on your computer as someone else, then yes indeed you will hear the sound if they play it.

I am happy for them to disappear as I don't use them.......

I have seen a few use them but it isnt well know how to use them so when they commands show up in thelog it can be confusing.

As for letting us have opions that is a bit scary...

Let me also add....(in relation to the small print, since this maybe seems especially muddy):

IF two or more users decides to make a special "share" of soundfiles... (same ones stored on each puter)... I bet ya they have more songs than that in their "My Music" folder... where it is typically stored. And how can they seperate those from the rest?... also still.. which are on server and which not? (there is no feature to make folders inside what manor lists even.. it is just one long list)

Some users have up to thousands of songs on their puter... good luck with finding the shared ones Smile (well I suppose you could name all shared ones: "sharedwiththisperson_oursong2.wav", but blah)... and if you have say 1000 songs in your music folder.. manor has to check them all in list when booting.

Me thinks using a media player for playing them far outdoes manor way, and I have only heard one or two cases of "sharing" music this way anyhow.. and we still have the problem with "the odd third user"

Well With mine I keep all Wavs in A Folder in My Documents named Manor Sounds and all other files where Manor cant see them as it only looks over My Documents
and in WDD we Link the Song folders so all can D/L them at will making the share easy but for the Most part all we have come accross love it the only ones that dont are Mac and when an MP3 is made into a PCM wav it will not play for them threw Manor

A reasonable model to follow to avoid Mac deafness in Manor is to follow the iPod.
It seems that device has some music market penetration and serves both platforms. That was the choice the Lindens made with Video as well. I like the choice for another reason, some artist may get a few pennies off the 99 cent download.

iPod Compatible audio formats (codecs)

AAC (M4A, M4B, and M4P up to 320 Kbps)
MP3 (up to 320 Kbps)
MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR)
WAV
AA (Audible spoken word, formats 2, 3, and 4)

Manor (u-law/a-law) ok for app noise, doors and gongs.

Also LongFang,
There is a variety of PCM (signed or unsigned) that plays in Manor to Macs and PC's.
Perhaps Scots will 'chime' in and tell us....
I am not experienced with it because they typically are very large files.
But for Holiday rooms it may keep you from having grumpy Mac visitors.

Not sure about PCM. The reason MP3's are a pain is the MP3 decoder on the Mac doesn't work the way the docs say it's supposed to and I haven't had time to sort it out.

As the audio thing is a huge can of worms I'm looking at ways to make it easy to use other players from within Manor for songs. The audio code built into Manor was really only designed for sound effects anyway (i.e. door closing, gongs, etc).
